What to see in Durham [Complete Guide ]

Bill Bryson called Durham ‘a perfect little city’, The Independent named it as one of the best cities in the world to visit in 2020, and Condé Nast’s Traveler magazine readers voted Durham the ‘Best city in the UK’. With such reviews we couldn't miss it, while we were so close, in Newcastle.

We started our day trip to Durham with a lovely walk by the river

It took us about an hour, walking slowly, taking a lot of pictures with the ducks refreshing in the river and the wild flowers. Looking up at the Cathedral and Castle from this point is truly inspiring. The river bank is a delightful place to recharge in nature and soak up the peacefulness of the whole area.

Pause for a moment on Framwellgate Bridge

We continue our visit with a stop on Framwellgate Bridge. This is a historic pedestrian bridge, built in
the 15th century bridge, a lovely place to pause for a moment in the hustle and bustle of the city center and enjoy the picturesque scenery.

Later on we went up the hill to explore the area around the Market Place

The market is both, inside and outside, a little shopping paradise with more than 50 independent trades. They sell everything here from hobby supplies to gift ideas, beauty products, jewelries, antiques and a wide selection of food and delicious artisan sweets.

We found the main boulevard in Durham transformed into a nice umbrella lane, a beautiful surprise

Durham city center is a delightful maze of narrow cobbled streets and heritage buildings, charismatic independent shops, and small traditional pubs.

Palace Green in Durham is possibly one of the finest squares in the world with history on all four walls

Next pause was on the grass, bathed in sunshine, admiring this well kept area of the city, surrounded by fantastic historic monuments. The Cathedral and Castle are opposite each other and the museum and other buildings of architectural interest form the other two sides. My phone is gonna get uncharged soon with the amount of pictures I'm taking.

Best tourist attraction to see in Durham - 1000 years of history in the finest Norman Cathedral in the world

Left Durham's finest tourist attraction for the end of our tour, the magnificent Cathedral, UNESCO Heritage Site. From the outside, we were blown away by the sheer scale of this magnificent building. Inside the vastness is obvious and the spirituality is present. The stone columns supporting the roof are like a line of gigantic trees reaching up to the heavens, each with a different design. We looked and marveled at the spectacular ceilings, glass windows and carvings. Every piece of this Cathedral is a work of art.

Dinner with friends is always the best

Unfortunately we didn't manage to visit the Castle, as was getting late and we didn't want to miss dinner with friends. Getting out of the city center we realized Durham is a hill city, tiring if you don't have a car. Buses are not so helpful, but getting to see our friends, made the 20 minutes climb well worth it. And the food, simply delicious.
