How to travel to Loch Ness cheap, in a day trip from Edinburgh

This tour was the best decision that we made throughout our entire stay in Edinburgh. I had wanted to visit the Scottish Highlands but I quickly realized there was no way I would make it traveling on my own. This region is not so well connected by public transport, autumn days are short and I didn't want to lose all the time trapped in a bus. I was reading multiple travel blogs and I saw the recommendations for traveling around Scotland either by renting a car or booking day trips.

Why I choose the LochNessBus Tour? Because they have a promotional launch-offer of just 29 pounds (while the majority of Loch Ness Tours costs 50 pounds) & and I also read excellent reviews about the company! Can you believe they are already in the top 5 Tour Companies in Edinburgh on TripAdvisor? Book quick as the promotional price won't last forever. The tour started at 8:00 AM in a very convenient meeting point on the Royal Mile. Barnie was our tour guide and driver for the day. He was friendly from the first minute, knowledgeable and super entertaining, making the 12 hours day trip much easier than expected. The bus was comfortable and the tour is well organized with a good balance of time spent on the bus & outdoors.

It was incredible getting to see the Highlands and Lochs. On the way, we stopped several times to take in all the beauty of Scotland.

Breakfast at Trossachs Woollen Mill

First stop was for breakfast in Kilmahog, a small Scottish village. From outside this place looks like a huge cottage house with a little farm, a great place for taking pictures with the Highland Cattle on the field.
Inside is a big shop with various souvenirs from cashmere to shortbread and whiskey. I was surprised to find a shortbread with only 1 pound. Also, there is a coffee place & restaurant all under one roof! The place got crowded with all the tourists getting off from different busses but I still managed to enjoy a nice cup of tea & a Victorian sponge cake.

A quick stop for photos at Loch Tulla Viewpoint

As I stepped out the bus I was amazed by the beautiful scenery. Autumn in Scotland is amazing! I had a short conversation with Mother Nature while watching the clouds passing above Tulla Loch. Everything was perfect, besides the temperature. Barnie warned us it was gonna get cold, damn was freezing! The wind is crazy in this valley. Couldn't resist more than 10 minutes :))

Scenic road trip throw Highland & The Three Sisters viewpoint

There are a few places in my life that I've found more ruggedly beautiful than the Highlands of Scotland. The place is magical - it's so far north, so remote, that sometimes it feels like you've left this world and gone to another. Winter is approaching and mountains were covered with snow. We stopped for 15 minutes to photograph the "Three Sisters" also known as Scotland's most photographed mountain for its iconic conical shape. I felt so close to nature and so happy, I even forgot about the cold. Or maybe it was a little bit warmer here, surrounded by the high mountains.

Looking for Nessie, the monster of Loch Ness

Finally, around 1 o'clock, we made it to our destination, up north in Fort Augustus, where we stopped for two hours.

I was wandering around the little city, feeding the ducks until the rain started pouring badly. That moment I understood what Barnie was telling us in the morning about the weather in Scotland: "In one day you can feel all the four seasons."

Later we got to do a lovely optional cruise of Loch Ness. The boat has a roof that prevented us from getting hit by the rain and the ticket was only 13.5£/pp. quite affordable being a group.

Loch Ness is the second largest lake by surface area in Great Britain, but due to its great depth, it is the largest by volume in the British Isles. Its deepest point is 230 m!
The guide told it contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined. A piece of very interesting information to me, seeing the black color, almost dirty and unclear water of the lake.

The trip is well worth it, beautiful nature, lots of photo opportunities and interesting stories said funnily, by the cruise staff. The cruise took an hour and of course, Nessie did not show up at this "private meeting". Nevertheless, my trip to Scotland would not have been impeccable without Loch Ness visit.

A look back at the history of Scotland at Commando Memorial

Next, we made a short stop to honor the dead of WW2. The statue is in a beautiful location with the spectacular scenery of the Scottish Highlands. There’s also a small memorial garden nearby where poppy flowers and pictures reassemble the whole story. Every time I visit this type of place I feel sad…

I tasted the best whiskey ice-cream in Pitlochry

When Queen Victoria fell in love with the Highlands of Scotland, Pitlochry was a quiet village surrounded by pine-covered hills. It became famous when she named it one of the finest resorts in Europe, and visitors began arriving to discover the magic of the Highlands. Soon after the place became famous for the whiskey ice-cream, the best you can try in Scotland, so our 1 hour stop was all about it. There are multiple little ice-cream shops on the main street, and with so many tourists, it is easy to understand why you need 1 hour to wait in line to get it. it tastes delicious and eating it slowly while walking on the picturesque streets of Pitlochry, made it a great way to celebrate the end of this day trip.
